Vietnamese banks recorded a historic profit surge in 2025, fueled by aggressive credit growth and a digital-driven push into non-interest income, according to financial reports released this week.
By late January 2026, the number of banks joining the elite “30-trillion VND club” (approximately $1.18 billion) had doubled within a year. Six major lenders have now crossed this threshold, compared to only three in 2024.
State-owned giant Vietcombank maintained its undisputed crown as the country’s most profitable lender, posting an estimated pre-tax profit of 45 trillion VND. It was followed by VietinBank, which saw a nearly 30 percent jump to a record 41 trillion VND, and BIDV at 36 trillion VND.
In a landmark shift, the private sector made a historic breakthrough. For the first time, three major private lenders – VPBank, MB, and Techcombank – all surpassed the 30-trillion VND mark. VPBank led the private pack with a 53 percent surge in profit to 30.6 trillion VND.
Analysts attribute the stellar performance to a credit boom, with sector-wide lending estimated to have grown 19 percent in 2025, the highest rate in years. “The capital injection into manufacturing, exports, and a recovering real estate sector has been a primary engine,” an industry report noted.
Beyond traditional lending, banks also reaped rewards from “non-interest income.” A bullish stock market and a surge in foreign exchange trading significantly bolstered bottom lines.
Furthermore, a nationwide push toward digitalization helped lenders lower operational costs and attract more low-cost deposits (CASA). Despite fluctuations in interest rates throughout the year, robust demand for mortgage and consumer loans from a recovering middle class ensured stable revenue streams for the nation’s banking giants.
